Current Research Trials in Progress
CHAMPION (Dr. Weinstock)
The CHAMPION Trial is enrolling patients with severe congestive heart failure. Under investigation is a tiny paper clip sized “CardioMems” device which can be implanted non-surgically in the pulmonary artery in the catheterization lab. Each patient receives a monitoring device at home which is used to non-invasively measure the pressures in the heart on a daily basis. The information is transmitted to Dr. Weinstock who can adjust medications when appropriate to prevent episodes of worsening heart failure that would otherwise result in admission to the hospital. We are one of a limited number of cardiac centers around the U.S. participating in the trial.
CREATE-PAS (Dr. Weinstock)
The CREATE-PAS Trial is enrolling patients with severe carotid artery disease who are considered “high-risk” for surgery based on advanced age (> 75) or underlying medical illness. Instead of surgery, these patients are treated with a carotid stent in the catheterization lab typically in less than an hour and are discharged home the following day. The study is a Registry so all enrolled patients are treated with the already FDA-approved ev3 Protégé carotid stent. We are one of a limited number of cardiac centers around the U.S. participating in the trial.
REFORM (Dr. Weinstock)
The REFORM Trial is enrolling patients with clinically and hemodynamically significant renal artery stenosis who undergo renal artery balloon angioplasty with an inadequate result. Patients undergo renal artery stent implantation at the same time as the angioplasty procedure using the already FDA-approved Cook Formula 418 stent. We are one of a limited number of cardiac centers around the U.S. participating in the trial.
UPCOMING TRIALS (Dr. Weinstock)
Several upcoming device trials are planned for the near future including clinical trials utilizing a recently approved coronary stent; a new atherectomy device for use in the leg arteries; and a new stent for use in leg arteries.
